    There is more than one way to create geometry in Abaqus/CAE. The pre-processor (CAE) allows the user to create geometries, parts and assemblies, whether 1D, 2D or 3D. However very complex geometries could be time consuming using the pre-processer, and it is vastly easier using dedicated CAD software. For this 3D structure, I can use the built-in ABAQUS General Contact (Explicit). I tried defining the contact surfaces pair by pair, and the 2D model was actually worse in terms of computation time (it would take 10 times longer than my 3D model!). A collegue also ran into this problem with a flat 2D structure.
